Genesis: The Tower - Guide
Open with Prayer.
Lord, we wish to prepare well for this time. We want to make ourselves ready and
available to you. In all that we are and try to do, in all our encounters and reflections,
even the frustrations and failings, help us to place our lives in your hands.
Lord, we give you ourselves and we give you this time. Amen.
Sunday’s sermon was on the story of the Tower of Babel found in Genesis 11:1-9. Johnny went
several directions with the context of this story and how it fits into the opening chapters of
Genesis. He began by saying, as he has in previous sermons in this series, that Genesis tells a
story about God and us. The story we choose to live in can define us.
● Take time for each person to share “their story.” Give each person five minutes to share
where they are from, what people and events have shaped their lives, places they have
lived, and how they have sensed God shaping their story. (If this is all you do for the
gathering, it might be well worth it.)
When the Lord sees one people speaking the same language it is not to be taken that the Lord
is against oneness and unity. It’s just that God wants people unified in his purposes.
● The Babel story shows unity leveraged for rebellion. How can we use unity and
community in our workplaces, churches, and families for God’s purposes instead?
● What unites people in the family of God?
● What values do you treasure that bring you together with others?
