Stories Jesus Told: The Wise and Foolish Builders - Guide
Open with Prayer
Warm Up Question:
● Do you consider yourself a good listener? Why or why not?
Framing Thought:
The story of the two builders comes at the end of what we call the Sermon on the Mount. So
when Jesus says, “Therefore, whoever hears these words of mine...” he is referring to
everything he has been teaching. This story is how Jesus sums up the Sermon on the MOunt.
Read Matthew 7:24-27
● Name all the ways the two men are the same in terms of action and experience?
● What is the one thing where they are different?
● After all he teaches in Matthew chapters 5,6, and 7 why do you suppose Jesus doesn’t
end with “now go and do these things” but, instead, he tells this parable?
● How would you summarize this story of Jesus in your own words?
● Think of Jesus’ teachings, not only in the Sermon on the Mount but elsewhere. Which
ones are most attractive to you? Which ones are hardest for you to build into your life?
● What is one specific teaching of Jesus you need to build into your life right now?

Almighty God, give us grace to be not only hearers, but doers of your words, not only to admire,
but to obey, not only to profess, but to practice this faith, not only to love, but to live your
message.
Set our lives on your strong foundation. Amen.
